Tokyo Assemblywoman, Your Party
"The victim of sexist heckling during her questioning of city officials comes for an emergency press conference to explain the issues"
Tuesday, June 24, 2014, 15:00 - 16:00
みんなの党 東京都議会議員 塩村文夏
Tokyo Assemblywoman Ayaka Shiomura of the minor opposition Your Party was a virtual unknown when she stepped up to the microphone last week to question city officials about their gender policies. When one or more assemblymen began to taunt her with sexist calls, Shiomura's initial nervous laughter turned to tears under the persistent heckling. Little did the offender or offenders -- so far Akihiro Suzuki of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party has been the only one to come forward -- realize that their action would trigger such national outrage.
Assemblywoman Ayaka Shiomura has stepped into the spotlight and seized the moment. At a time when the Abe government is officially promoting measures to strengthen the social and economic position of women, disgraceful comments by at least one party member has brought public pressure upon them to take disciplinary action and apologize to the nation.
Tokyo Assemblywoman Ayaka Shiomura will come to the FCCJ for an emergency press conference to explain the issues in question and the actions she recommends.
